This week I heard a phrase that really resonated with me. Three simple words, DO IT NOW.
I began to ponder the significance of daily moments and felt inspired once again to seize the day. Sounds cliché-ish, I know. But it is imperative to focus on the moment we have NOW, not yesterday, and not tomorrow, if we are to experience growth and personal success in achieving our personal life’s purpose.
Of course, this all reflects the same sentiment reflected in the motto “Be Present.” We miss so much around us when we let our focus drift to another space in time. Now is a present tense adverb. Now is always with us. It is current and always available to us. We do not have to fear missing it nor do we have to wait for it. It is the time afforded us each day with each breath that we take.
And here is a lesson I am constantly learning. Do not rely on your accomplishments of yesterday to fuel your tank for today. Nor let the failures of the past drain your tank either. There is a majestic moment in the NOW to harness your immediate purpose, so seize it.
We all have “NOW.” It is how we use it that matters most. Now moments are never perfect. Some moments will be delightful and charged with energy and motivation building momentum to move us forward quickly. Opportunities will be easy to recognize and embrace. Other moments will be daunting and filled with challenges that deplete both our energy and motivation. Opportunities will seem scarce, and you may hesitate to embrace them, if you can recognize them at all.
But we must not forget that no matter how encumbered we are by our circumstances we do not have to allow them to command our day. We still have a moment to seize. We each have a moment in time to make a personal choice. Face your NOW reality with faith, not fear. Faith shouts possibility and enables action. Fear screams impossibility and disables action. But know this, both action and inaction will have a compounding affect to influence who are becoming. We are all becoming a certain kind of person. Are you happy with who are becoming? If not, you can choose to do something to make a positive change.
It is true, we are all shaped by our moments. Our past experiences have influenced who we have become to date. And our current moments will shape who we become tomorrow. So do not allow regrets of past choices paralyze you from moving forward NOW. You can turn things around starting today. Today is a new moment in time. It is a clean slate. A second chance. What you do with this moment matters.
How will you seize your moment? Will you pursue an opportunity that is available now? Will you seek out opportunity in an inopportune circumstance? Or will you choose to do nothing and remain in the same state of discontent?
We are always in a state of “becoming.” I love that. It fills me with hope. A specific moment in time does not seal my fate. There is always room for improvement and opportunity to make it happen.
But I did not always think this way. I too often fell victim to negative thought patterns that filled me with fear and analysis paralysis. I was stuck for a long time in a belief system rooted in past negative experiences. I failed to recognize the opportunity of shifting my mindset to embrace a new belief. I thought I was simply hard wired to think a certain way. But that is a falsehood, a nasty mind trick. We always have choices. So, I embraced a new mindset. And NOW (there’s that word again) I make choices and cultivate actions that give me courage to awaken old dreams and inspiration to dream new ones. It’s exciting. This newfound freedom has been liberating.
This leads to hope in pursuing unfulfilled dreams. It gives you something to strive towards but the beauty of it all is that you can thrive NOW in the process, even when it is not perfect because new moments occur everyday to offering us opportunities to make better choices.
There will be seasons when progress will be quick and dramatic and other seasons when progress will be slow and perceivably undetectable. But do not lose heart. Persistence pays off when you commit to it for the long haul.
And I would be remiss if I did not mention the ultimate hope, we have of finally reaching our perfected state of “being” when Christ returns to make us completely whole. One day He will gather His children in His arms, and He will heal all the brokenness of our lives for good. Philippians 1:6 states, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work in you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ returns.
That is the greatest motivation to keep moving forward each day as we press toward our goals and fulfill our purpose.
However, I want to clarify one crucial point here. I realize that this approach may be extra difficult for those who may be facing current mental health challenges. If you have a diagnosis of clinical depression or other forms of mental disorders, then you will need to seek professional help to navigate your journey. That is your moment to seize. I do not want to suggest that you can simply “think” your way out of your condition. That is why seizing the day looks different for everyone. It is such an individual journey. Sometimes it means reaching out for help when we are incapable of making the next step. Other times it means reaching for the stars. Either way, you are making the right choice to move you forward in your journey and that is what matters. Wisdom will dictate what decision will be best in any given moment.
This fact remains. We still have a choice to make.
What decision have you been avoiding? What action have you been procrastinating? What calling do you wish you could fulfill? It is time to pursue a better way. DO IT NOW.
