Have you ever found yourself wide awake at 3 a.m., your mind racing, stuck in the endless replay of the day's events or tomorrow’s uncertainty? Maybe you find yourself worrying about your kids, stressed by your responsibilities, disturbed by a difficult conversation, anxious about a strained relationship, or simply gripped by an unsettled feeling that won’t let go. For many women, especially after 40, sleep isn’t as simple as putting your head on the pillow.
I’ve had my share of these nights too.
My Personal Story
One of my earliest memories of a stressful, sleep-disrupted night occurred after a disturbing dream when I was about sixteen years old. My boyfriend at the time— now husband—lived in another community and would often ride his motorcycle to visit me on weekends. I never worried about him on the highway; he was a careful driver, and honestly, I loved the excitement of the occasional ride on the motorcycle with him myself.
But that night, after he had returned home, I dreamt that he had been in a terrible motorcycle accident and killed. I woke up shaken and crying, my heart pounding as though it had really happened. It was about three in the morning, and even though I logically knew he was probably fine, the dream left me with a heavy sense of fear and anxiety that I couldn’t shake.
Lying in bed restless and anxious, I finally reached for my Bible on the nightstand. I opened it at random, and it fell open to the book of Psalms. My eyes landed on this verse:
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8)
In that moment, it was as if God Himself whispered those words into my anxious spirit. Peace washed over me. I turned off the light, left the fear with Him, and drifted back into sweet, uninterrupted sleep.
That night may sound insignificant —a teenager with a bad dream—but it left a lasting impression. Over the years, I’ve found the same truth again and again: my mind may fill with anxious thoughts, but I don’t have to fight them alone. When I turn to God’s Word, I can replace fear with peace.
Why Sleepless Nights Happen
Maybe your story looks a little different.
You wake up from hot flashes or night sweats.
You toss and turn worrying about tomorrow’s to-do list.
You wake in the early hours and can’t quiet your thoughts long enough to rest again.
Whatever the cause, the result feels the same—you’re tired, restless, and longing for peace.
Filling Your Mind with Truth and Peace
Science tells us there are many things we can do to improve our sleep—avoiding caffeine late in the day, limiting screen time before bed, and setting a consistent routine. These are valuable tools, but I’ve found that what I fill my heart and mind with is just as important.
God’s Word has the power to comfort us right where we are. Those late-night verses are like whispers of truth, reminding us that we are not alone. When our bodies feel restless and our minds refuse to quiet, God meets us there with peace.
Practical Ways to Calm Your Mind Before Sleep
Here are a few practices that have helped me and may help you too:
Read Scripture or Pray – Keep a Bible or a favorite devotional by your bed. Even a few lines can calm an anxious heart.
Gratitude Journaling – Write down three things you’re thankful for before bed. Gratitude softens worry and creates space for peace.
Breathing Practice – Try the 4–7–8 breathing method: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8. This calms the nervous system.
Gentle Evening Boundaries – Avoid disturbing news or upsetting media late at night. Protect your mind from carrying heavy thoughts into sleep.
Create Restful Rituals – Dim the lights, sip a calming tea, or do gentle stretches before bed. These small signals tell your body it’s safe to rest.
A Final Word of Encouragement
That night so many years ago taught me something I still carry: I don’t have to rely on my own strength to quiet my anxious thoughts. God offers comfort in the very moments we need it most.
So the next time your mind won’t let you sleep, remember—you don’t have to stay stuck in the worry. Replace those racing thoughts with truth, invite peace into your evening, and rest knowing that God is watching over you.
And maybe tonight, you’ll find yourself drifting off to sleep more easily than you expected.
